Details: Lovely antique pair of Miyako Nippon Large Vases. Nippon essentially means, “Made in Japan.” After 1921, all pieces imported to the USA had to be marked “Made in Japan,” not “Nippon.” Therefore, this is our indicator as to when it was made. They are decorated with designs of stylized flowers and birds that have been piped, or “slip-trailed,” onto the body. These vases are a lovely example of the Japanese style, “Moriage,” as well as of the late 19th century international interest in exotic design. Miyako is a coastal city located in the Iwate prefecture of Japan. It is also the city that was devastated by the 2011 tsunami.
